Free Acoustic Concert with Pandafan

Enjoy a free acoustic concert with Pandafan at Fort Orange General Store! This indie-folk trio from the NY/Long Island metro area will be making a stop in downtown Albany to play two 40-minute sets. Learn more about Pandafan, and listen to some of their music at pandafan.net.

About the Band:
Inspired by the haunting harmonies of bands like Fleet Foxes and First Aid Kit, and finding kindred spirit the complex and detailed production of bands like The Decemberists and Lord Huron, Pandafan takes influences ranging from the Carter Family to Radiohead and adds their own intricate harmonic spin. The result is a unique vocal blend and energetic melodies.

Pandafan is three young women, all students at SUNY Purchase in While Plains, NY. Grace DeNatale is a classically trained violinist with an innate ability to sing and write complex lyrics. Delaney Hafener is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, handing guitar, keyboard, accordion and more. She began writing and recording at age 13. Stella Emmett is  a world-traveled soulful songwriter with a smooth voice.

Pandafan has played the Homegrown Music Café (opening for Tall Tall Trees) and the Great South Bay Music Festival. Notable shows include 89 North (opening for Unlikely Candidates), Nettie’s Market (opening for Swear and Shake), the famous Caffe Lena in Saratoga Spring, twice at the historic Suffolk Theater (opening for Caroline Doctorow and Pete Kennedy as well as at the 2015 Winterfest kickoff event) and at the stunning Guild Hall in East Hampton.

Yoga at Fort Orange

This week's class will be taught by a guest instructor, Alicia McDonough. Classes are $12 each and may be purchased at our Online Store.

A little bit about Alicia:

I fell in love with yoga my very first time practicing it. I remember it was a rainy and dreary day outside in Albany and I wanted nothing to do with it. I remember feeling as though my external environment impacted my internal environment; because it was raining and dreary outside, I felt the same on the inside. I was dragged to a class at Heartspace Yoga and Healing Arts. Late and in a hurry we ran inside to the studio, and of course were the last ones to arrive. At the conclusion of the class, however, my headspace had drastically shifted. I felt calm, still, and alive. I remember the feeling I had when I stepped outside and into the rain. What was dreary and lifeless before now felt bright and full of potential.

Yoga has given me the tools with which I am able to create a better environment, both internally and externally, for myself and those around me. I've learned that with many things in life, this practice is a process and it should be done with intent each and every time.

First Friday with artist Alex Waters

First Friday with artist Alex Waters

Join us for First Friday in downtown Albany! In partnership with Albany Center Gallery, local artist Alex Waters will have a pop-up exhibit opening reception at the Fort Orange General Store (412 Broadway) from 5-7 PM; the exhibit will be on display throughout the Labor Day weekend.

The Albany Center Gallery (488 Broadway) will also be hosting a closing reception for their “Passage” exhibit on Friday, while also hosting the launch of “Listening Here,” a new augmented reality app that encourages users to focus on the soundscape that surrounds them in the Downtown urban environment. More details on "Listening Here" can be found here.

About Alex Waters
Alex Waters was born in 1987 in Albany, NY. He was raised to the west in Esperance, a sprawling and peaceful rural area that happened to be a short drive from the urban landscape he would capture later in life.

Alex struggled early on with dyslexia. While a roadblock for some, Alex saw it as an opportunity to see the world from a strictly visual standpoint. In high school, he dabbled in multiple forms of media, including graphic design, before settling on painting in college. Alex attended Sage College of Albany and graduated in 2010. His official degree was a B.F.A in Studio Arts, but his concentration still showed his true passion: painting.  Alex has been influenced mostly by abstract artist William De Kooning (1904-1997), whose expressionism and use of color changed the face of what we call modern art after World War II. When asked why he is inspired by the concept of “action painting”, Alex can only say “I’m just a guy who paints how he feels.”

Alex has been featured in live painting events held by The Albany Barn, Albany Center Gallery, Wine and Dine for the Arts, and Christ’s Church Albany. He’s donated multiple live painted pieces to keep these organizations growing and contributing to the Capital Region. His work has also been featured at The Fountain Arts Show and The World Trade Gallery, both in New York City, and he recently received the Creative Spirit Award from the Capital Region Arts Center.

More information on Alex Waters may be found on his website.

Artist Statement
Both in and outside the world of visual art, abstract presenters are a mystery. They are both lauded and shunned. Their skills are doubted and awarded simultaneously. Their muses are presumed to be a deluge of political statements, ex-lovers, and pure fame grabbing. I saw in abstract art what I saw in everyday human lives: color and movement.

Due to my lifelong dyslexia, I knew I could never be a writer that tells the next great American story, but I could show it to anyone that wanted to see. In popular culture, abstract art has been the butt of jokes many times over and I knew that when taking on the aggressive art form I love most. I consider myself a keen observer of not only physical form, but interpersonal relationships and my only wish is to translate it onto canvas.  While many see “action painting” as an art that’s impossible to interpret, my mission is to reach many people’s hearts and minds with wild color and brush strokes. I see that as the actual human experience, wild and colorful. My goal is to break away from the societal portraiture that many have become accustomed to and create a new sense of beauty among the overstimulated masses. I ask that you join me on this journey.
