AllOverAlbany.com Speaker Series: Alexis Coe

From AllOverAlbany.com:

Check it out: AOA is bringing presidential historian Alexis Coe to the Fort Orange General Store May 17. And we'd love for you to join us. Tickets are just $10. Space is limited!

Coe has a new biography of George Washington -- You Never Forget Your First -- coming out next year from Viking (Penguin/Random House), was recently part of a CNN series about the Kennedys, and she co-hosted the Audible series Presidents Are People, Too!

We'll be talking about all sorts of things related to presidential history -- because, um, that subject has gotten very dramatic lately -- along with a few other topics like history photo accounts on Twitter and what it's like working as a historian right now. (Will there be something about Chester A. Arthur? Yes, we think there will.)

There will also be Q&A with the crowd. And we'll have coffee from Stacks and donuts from Cider Belly.

So we'd love to see you there! This AOA-organized event is Thursday, May 17 starting at 6:30 pm Fort Orange General Store in downtown Albany (conversation starts at 7 pm). Tickets are $10 and available online now.

This event is made possible in part thanks to the sponsorship of O'Connell and AronowitzBeahive AlbanyBroadway Plaza Liquors, the Hilton Albany, and the the Mop and Bucket Improv Theater.

Utilize these found objects to make a beautiful everlasting arrangement for your table or mantle, which can be added to as the season continues. Colie of Flower Scout will provide materials and demonstrate techniques for making simple, natural arrangements with local materials.

Bio: Colie Collen is a self-taught floral designer and writer living in Troy, NY. After farming and teaching urban gardening for several years, in 2013 Colie started Flower Scout, and she now designs with florals for weddings and other events. Yoga at Fort Orange

Start your weekend with a refreshing yoga session at Fort Orange! This class, taught by Jammella Anderson, is suitable for all levels and will result in greater strength, flexibility, and connection to the body.

Jammella Anderson, RYT 200, is a certified vinyasa/hatha yoga instructor from Albany, New York. She has been teaching around the Capital Region for 3+ years. Jammella believes yoga is important not only for the body, but the mind. Pushing yourself to your personal edge and finding freedom in the unknown is an important part of emotional, mental and physical health. "Learning how to link my breath with movement allowed me to create a story without words, like poetry in motion. Yoga should be accessible to anyone and everyone. There are no exclusions because of body type, gender age or orientation. It is all encompassing, and that's why I teach. I want to provide a safe community for people who seek to find a higher form of self and to show others that self-care is self-love." Jammella trained with Jennilee Toner, yoga and anatomy teacher in 2014 through the Hot Warrior Yoga series.

Yoga at Fort Orange

Start your weekend with a refreshing yoga session at Fort Orange! This class, taught by Alicia McDonough, is suitable for all levels and will result in greater strength, flexibility, and connection to the body.

A little bit about Alicia: I fell in love with yoga my very first time practicing it. I remember it was a rainy and dreary day outside in Albany and I wanted nothing to do with it. I remember feeling as though my external environment impacted my internal environment; because it was raining and dreary outside, I felt the same on the inside. I was dragged to a class at Heartspace Yoga and Healing Arts. Late and in a hurry we ran inside to the studio, and of course were the last ones to arrive. At the conclusion of the class, however, my headspace had drastically shifted. I felt calm, still, and alive. I remember the feeling I had when I stepped outside and into the rain. What was dreary and lifeless before now felt bright and full of potential. Yoga has given me the tools with which I am able to create a better environment, both internally and externally, for myself and those around me. I've learned that with many things in life, this practice is a process and it should be done with intent each and every time.

1st Friday Art Exhibit with Jae Schalekamp

Join us on Friday, October 6, for 1st Friday in Albany in conjunction with Albany Center Gallery! This month, we'll be featuring the artwork of Jae Schalekamp.

About Jae Schalekamp:
After 15 years of working in the textile design field, I felt the urge to bring to light my own style and aesthetic expression. I currently paint and design full-time in my open, light-filled studio in the Warehouse District of Albany, NY. I am inspired by a wide range of media and subject matters. For the past couple years, I have been wrestling with materials and techniques and deciphering vague images and ideas that had accumulated in my head and sketch books over the years. My nature-inspired paintings are more in the manner of a portrait, rather than a landscape. I take time to look at individual subjects in nature, acknowledging the existence of the tiniest of flowers that faithfully bloom in the wilderness. I look at all different shapes and sizes of plants, mingled and tangled, yet keeping their own growing directions toward light. I often find myself trying to identify simple truth and wisdom through the phenomenal cycle of nature and the interaction between different natural elements. The subjects I paint are mostly out of my imagination or memory. My subjects are either simply depicted as a state of being or situated as a metaphor, as means of personified expression. Sometimes I include a girl in my painting, especially when the motif evokes my childhood sentiment. I also like to play with forms that change according to different points of view/direction. I also make lighting in hand-made mulberry paper, manipulated by tearing and reconstructing, some painted in sumi-ink or gilded. This is another way of my visual expression that uses beautiful natural material and light. My lighting can be seen on JAEYOONMIN.com

Hurricane Relief Yoga at Fort Orange

**Proceeds from this yoga class will be donated to Hurricane Relief efforts through M&T Bank's Charitable Foundation. The suggested donation is $10 and spaces may be reserved through our Online Store, or in person the morning of the class.**

Nikki has devoted the past decade of her professional life to promoting the health and wellbeing in the Capital District. She began her personal journey into yoga in 2005, and in 2012 a 200-hour Hatha Yoga teacher training opened the door to her dream of sharing yoga with the community as a pathway to stress relief and a healthy lifestyle.

Nikki's classes could be described as “beginner plus.” She designs her classes specifically to be done by people with little experience with the practice, while still providing a challenge to all skill levels. Linking breath and movement for a relaxing practice, Nikki safely guide students into poses and tailors each session to the individual needs of each of her classes.

This class has a suggested donation of $10 and may be purchased at our Online Store.
